The first job I ever had was as a Flagger or Traffic guard.

A flagger is a traffic guard who directs traffic with flags.

Four months after I graduated high school in 2007, my dad got me a job with a construction company he had been working with for two years at that point.

I was thrilled to finally be able to make some money & buy things that I wanted.

For two years, I would travel with my dad to work in various small towns in Texas with the construction crew we were assigned to. I don’t know how I lasted two years. Working outside was unbearable when the weather was too hot or too cold.

During the cold times, when we got home after our shift was over, I would run to the bathroom and take a nice hot bath. Those were the best baths I ever had thanks to the brutal cold.

I’ve worked in some interesting places during those two years as a flagger. Some of them made me feel like I was in the Old West with the beautiful hills far away. The only thing that was missing were cowboys riding around with their horses.

But I’ll never forget this one place we worked in, because of how quiet and eerie the town felt. I wish I knew the name of the place. My dad and I definitely took notice of it.
