Three years ago, I flew to Peoria, Illinois to see a close friend (I’ll call her Dee) and her family. It was a great visit. I did activities I had never done before, like mushroom hunting and seeing a castle there.

My mind was blown when I got to see the Soderstrom Castle. Before seeing it, I didn’t think castles existed in America. I thought they only existed in continents like Europe and Asia. So, to see the beauty of the Soderstrom Castle was a joy on a beautiful Peoria day.

The castle has been a part of Peoria since it was built in 1930, thanks to Helen Chubbock Lusk and her husband, George Lusk. They traveled through Europe in 1927 and took notes of the features they loved from various castles so that they could build their own in Peoria.

I spent a week with Dee, her husband, and some of her family. I treasured all the time I had with them. The day I had to leave Peoria was a sad one. Seeing Dee, her husband, daughter, and granddaughter waving goodbye at me at the Peoria International Airport was tough.
