The Iron Giant: A Movie That Was Different From My Assumptions

Some of my thoughts on the 1999 film

When I saw the trailer for this movie in 1998/99, it looked like it was gonna be a lighthearted movie about a boy and this huge robot he become friends with. That was my thought of the movie until I saw it. The people who made those trailers did a great job of not giving most of the movie away.

I had no idea how deep & heavy this animated movie would be. From the first scene, (When the Giant is flying in space and lands in the town of Rockwell, Maine in 1957), this movie has a completely different feel to it than the one that was advertised in the trailers.

Seeing a sailor look like he drowned (Only to find out the Giant saved him later on) was pretty intense.

Seeing the main character Hogarth (Who’s a kid that’s around the same age as I was when I saw the movie), gets taken out by a tree was brutal to watch. You can feel the impact when he turns his head from running from the Giant and collides with the tree branch.
