Why People Overshare (In My Opinion)
Oversharing is caring
Thanks to the Medium universe and social media, I’ve learned about so many words that could have taken a lot longer for me to discover.
Overshare is the recent word of the day that I’ve learned about. Depending on the individual, this word can mean different things to all of us. I get the sense that oversharing is seen by many as a negative thing to do, and it’s understandable.
If we share too much information about ourselves with the wrong people, that info can be used against us in an argument or we could become an adversary to that person. So, there are valid reasons to not overshare.
But then you have the people who were allowed to overshare from the beginning of their lives. So, they share what’s on their mind freely, without worrying about how other people will react to their sharing. That’s a wonderful place to be in my opinion.
I believe that certain people overshare (online or offline) — because they did a lot of undersharing in the past. They probably wanted to share stuff that was bothering them or good news about things that happened to them, but they were shut down by their parents, other kids/teens/young adults, and adult figures in their early lives.
